Shield of the Upright

$8,000.00 $8,000.00

This artwork evokes the powerful imagery of Psalm 11, where the Psalmist places unwavering trust in the Lord despite the threats and dangers surrounding him. The piece opens with a figure, poised against a backdrop of a mountain range, mirroring the opening verse:  "In the Lord put I my trust: how say ye to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain?" (Psalm 11:1). The figure does not flee in fear but stands firm in faith, embodying the resolve of the righteous who trust in the Lord for their protection.

Above, the sky is both serene and turbulent. The clouds swirl with ominous energy, symbolizing the tension created by the wicked who  "bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may privily shoot at the upright in heart." (Psalm 11:2). Yet the figure remains unshaken, knowing that the Lord watches over them from His heavenly throne:  "The Lord is in his holy temple, the Lord's throne is in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men." (Psalm 11:4).

The mountain in the background is majestic, representing the stability and strength of the divine presence. The Lord's testing of the righteous, as described in  "The Lord trieth the righteous," (Psalm 11:5), is reflected in the dramatic contrast of light and shadow that plays across the mountain. It is a reminder that trials are part of life, but they serve to refine and fortify those who remain steadfast in their faith.

In the distance, a storm gathers—a vivid portrayal of the coming judgment on the wicked:  "Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup." (Psalm 11:6). The tempest is both fearsome and awe-inspiring, a symbol of divine justice that will descend upon those who engage in violence and deceit.

The focus of the artwork, however, remains on the righteous. The figure is bathed in a warm, glowing light, symbolizing the favor of the Lord.  "For the righteous Lord loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright." (Psalm 11:7). This light is a beacon of hope, signifying divine approval and the ultimate victory of good over evil. The upright can trust that they are seen and loved by God, and that His justice will prevail.

This Psalm's message is a potent reminder for believers today that, despite the chaos and evil in the world, God remains in control. He sees all and will act in His time. On the internet, Psalm 11 is often shared in moments of personal or collective crisis, encouraging believers to hold onto their faith and to trust in God's protection, even when the foundations of the world appear to be crumbling. The artwork reflects this inner peace and strength that comes from trusting in the divine, reminding viewers that righteousness will ultimately be rewarded with God’s protection and love.
