Cry of the Storm, Echo of Deliverance

$9,100.00 $9,100.00

In this evocative artwork, the clash between light and darkness is brought to life through the meeting of stormy, turbulent skies and a barren, rocky landscape below. On one side, a furious sky, painted in deep blues and swirling clouds, descends upon the desolate earth, symbolizing the weight of life's trials and the imminent threat of being overwhelmed. The other side, bathed in the glow of a distant light, reflects the quiet promise of deliverance. This visual tension reflects the cry of the psalmist in  Psalms 70:1 : "Make haste, O God, to deliver me; make haste to help me, O Lord."

The storm, representing the forces that seek to harm, roils with an almost palpable urgency. The sharp, jagged rocks on the ground embody the hardships faced by the vulnerable, the "poor and needy" mentioned in  70:5 : "But I am poor and needy: make haste unto me, O God: thou art my help and my deliverer." The contrast between the angry skies and the stillness of the rocks reflects the psalmist’s plea for quick intervention in the face of overwhelming adversity.

The lightning in the storm clouds, though a fleeting presence, offers a glimpse of power and illumination, symbolizing divine intervention. It strikes with precision, a reminder of the psalmist’s desire for those who seek harm to be turned back in confusion, as expressed in  70:2 : "Let them be ashamed and confounded that seek after my soul." The visual of the storm crashing into the earth mirrors the psalmist’s cry for God to send swift justice, scattering enemies and confusion like the chaotic bursts of lightning across the dark sky.

As an artist, my goal was to capture the urgency and vulnerability of human suffering — the moments where we find ourselves at the mercy of external forces, with nothing but our voice to call out for help. The image of the storm is not merely a reflection of nature’s fury, but an allegory for the emotional and spiritual turmoil that one faces when overwhelmed by opposition. The desolate, reddish earth below reflects the weariness of waiting, of being constantly battered by life’s struggles, while the light breaking through the storm suggests that divine help is near, as promised in the psalm.

The rocky terrain, though harsh, also symbolizes the resilience of the human spirit. Though it bears the marks of the storm, it stands firm, waiting for the moment of salvation. This mirrors the sentiment of  70:4 : "Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee." The joy and hope in this verse find their visual counterpart in the distant golden light on the horizon, which, though faint, promises relief. This glow is the visual representation of divine help on the way, a soft yet certain answer to the cry of the psalmist.

In creating this piece, I was inspired by the profound emotional intensity of  Psalms 70 . It is a psalm of urgency, of desperation, and of faith that God will answer in the nick of time. The swirling chaos of the clouds, juxtaposed with the still, yet scarred, landscape below, represents this tension between despair and hope. The colors in the piece — the blues, the stormy grays, and the warm hues breaking through — all reflect the emotional landscape of the psalmist’s plea, moving from the heaviness of anguish to the bright expectation of deliverance.

In life, we all face moments where the storms seem too great, where we feel lost in the turmoil of opposition or inner struggle. This psalm — and this artwork — serves as a reminder that even in those darkest times, there is a divine force ready to intervene. It reassures us that God will not tarry, that He is both our help and our deliverer. The distant light breaking through the clouds symbolizes this very hope: though the storm rages, deliverance is always within sight for those who seek it.

Through this piece, I wanted to explore not only the desperation of human cries for help but also the certainty of divine response. The storm, though terrifying, is temporary. The light, though distant, is eternal. This artwork stands as both a visual representation of  Psalms 70 and a testament to the resilience of faith — a faith that, even in the face of chaos, believes in the swift deliverance and power of God.
