In 2021, Annette was set to compete for Nigeria in the Tokyo Olympics, but an administrative error by the Nigerian Federation led to her disqualification, shattering her Olympic dreams on her 25th birthday. This devastating setback could have ended her career, but instead, Annette chose to forge a new path, joining Team USA and committing to her sport with renewed determination. Her journey to Paris was one of redemption, and on August 6, 2024, she made history as the first American woman to medal in the Olympic hammer throw, achieving a season-best throw of 75.48 meters.

Annette Nneka Echikunwoke is a Nigerian-American hammer thrower who lives in Ohio, United States. She was due to represent Nigeria at the 2020 Summer Olympics but was disqualified due to the negligence of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria. She changed allegiance and represented the United States at the 2024 Summer Olympics, winning a silver medal in the event, the first Olympic medal for the U.S. in the Women's Hammer Throw event. She holds the African area record in hammer throw, with a throw of 75.49 meters in Tucson in 2021.

The artwork captures key moments of her Olympic journey—her intense focus during the competition, the joy of victory as she waves the American flag, and the pride in holding her silver medal. The night sky in the background, adorned with stars, symbolizes the vast potential Annette possesses and the countless possibilities that lie ahead.

The color scheme, dominated by deep purples and blues, reflects the emotional depth of Annette's journey—from the darkness of disappointment to the light of her triumph in Paris. These colors also evoke the serenity and calm she maintained despite the high stakes and pressures of Olympic competition.

Annette’s story is not just one of athletic success but of personal growth and resilience. Overcoming the heartbreak of Tokyo and finding peace in forgiveness, she rose to new heights, both figuratively and literally, in Paris. Her journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes everywhere, showing that setbacks can be transformed into opportunities for greatness.

This artwork was designed to honor Annette Echikunwoke’s journey—her strength, resilience, and the historic achievement she brought home for Team USA.
