$12,500.00 $12,500.00

This artwork is an homage to the Smithsonian Institution, an iconic cultural and educational beacon. The red sandstone  Smithsonian Castle , the heart of the Institution, stands tall in the center, symbolizing the lasting power of knowledge, discovery, and history. The architecture is a vivid reminder of the building’s Gothic Revival style, completed in 1855, which has become synonymous with American intellectual growth.

I used the  sunburst effect to signify enlightenment, as if the light of knowledge shines through the layers of time and history. It symbolizes hope and curiosity that the Smithsonian fosters in everyone who walks through its halls.

The  statue of James Smithson , the benefactor who gifted his fortune to establish this prestigious institution, stands quietly in the foreground. He watches over the visitors, eternally tied to his gift of knowledge to a nation he had never visited. This reflection on his legacy mirrors my personal inspiration behind this piece—to capture how one individual can spark the growth of knowledge that benefits millions.

The colors of this artwork play a critical emotional role.  Blue , the calm yet endless sky, signifies peace, stability, and the open possibilities of learning. The  fiery orange represents passion and energy, much like the creativity and drive that brings about the wonders housed within the Smithsonian’s walls. The blended shades reflect the dynamic relationship between calm reflection and burning curiosity.

The  blurred figures of visitors and other historic buildings layered within this piece remind us that while the Smithsonian is a present-day institution, it is deeply rooted in American and global history. It's a place where the past meets the future, where moments of historical significance are enshrined, yet constantly explored by new generations.

The  Smithsonian Institution was established in 1846, thanks to a bequest from British scientist James Smithson. The Castle, completed in  1855 , serves as the Institution’s administrative headquarters. The combination of the Castle's history and the cutting-edge research and exhibitions found throughout the Smithsonian's museums represents the duality I sought to portray in this piece—a blend of past, present, and future.

By merging architectural elements, human figures, and the emotional use of color, this artwork honors the Smithsonian’s place as an enduring institution dedicated to the expansion of human knowledge.

The rich  reds represent not only the architecture of the Smithsonian Castle but also the emotional warmth that comes from the love of learning.  Blue tones provide balance, grounding the viewer in a sense of calm and reflection. The  orange hues indicate the fiery, intense passion that every scholar, visitor, and learner carries with them into this institution. This harmonious combination of colors mirrors the Smithsonian's role as both a keeper of history and a spark for future exploration.

Creating this piece allowed me to reflect on my own experiences with the Smithsonian. Every visit feels like a journey through time, where history is alive, and knowledge is constantly unfolding. I wanted to capture that feeling of timelessness—the way the  Smithsonian stands as a monument to learning that will continue long after we are gone. The layering of architectural structures is intentional, signifying that knowledge is built one step at a time, over centuries, by many minds. Through this piece, I aimed to evoke a sense of respect for history and awe for the infinite possibilities of discovery.
