Strength and Glory: Hampton Morris's Historic Lift at Paris 2024

Hampton Morris, born on February 17, 2004, in Marietta, Georgia, made history by winning the bronze medal in the Men's 61 kg weightlifting event at the 2024 Summer Olympics. At just 20 years old, he became the youngest American male weightlifter to medal since 1984. His journey to the podium was marked by perseverance, evident in his performance that tied an Olympic record in the Clean & Jerk with a lift of 172 kg. This effort brought his total to 298 kg, securing his place among the world’s best.

In 2022, Morris further solidified his reputation by winning the gold medal at the Junior World Weightlifting Championships in Heraklion, Greece, setting a junior world record with a 160 kg lift in the Clean & Jerk. That same year, he triumphed at the Pan American Weightlifting Championships in Bogotá, Colombia, breaking his own record with a 163 kg lift at the Pan American Junior Championships in Lima, Peru. Morris's success continued into 2023, where he claimed gold in the Clean & Jerk at the World Weightlifting Championships, marking the first time an American had won a world title in the sport since 1972. His achievements culminated at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he made history as the first U.S. male weightlifter to win an Olympic medal since 1984, securing bronze in the men’s 61 kg event.
