This artwork blends the natural beauty and deep historical significance of De Soto National Memorial, reflecting on the journey of Hernando de Soto and the legacy left behind. As I created this piece, my mind was drawn to the connections between the flowing river, the journey of explorers, and the ever-present passage of time.

The canoe with paddlers symbolizes the expedition’s journey down unfamiliar waterways, a nod to De Soto's exploration of the American southeast. The stillness of the water represents both discovery and reflection—much like the explorers themselves, who ventured into the unknown, leaving behind ripples that still touch us today.
The monument/obelisk stands tall against the scene, a symbol of history’s permanence amidst change. It serves as a reminder of the countless lives shaped by De Soto’s journeys and the subsequent interactions between European explorers and indigenous peoples. As I painted this, I reflected on how structures like these stand as testaments to human resilience and our constant drive to memorialize the past.
The wooden benches by the riverbank invite a moment of contemplation, as if offering a seat for those who want to pause and reflect on the passage of time. These benches, set under a sprawling moss-draped tree , reminded me of the ever-present contrast between nature and history—the tree’s aged branches providing a peaceful canopy over the ancient stories of the land.
In the background, the historical encampments evoke early life in the region, the huts symbolizing survival, community, and the meeting of cultures. These structures point to the lives lived by the indigenous peoples long before De Soto’s arrival, as well as the changes that followed.
The color palette plays an essential role in conveying the emotional tone of this piece. Soft blues of the sky and water signify calmness, introspection, and history's tranquil unfolding, while the warm, soft oranges and pinks of the horizon suggest the glow of discovery, and the first light of a new era. These colors blend, just as history and nature blend at this site, creating a sense of nostalgia for a time long passed, but whose impact lingers in the present.
As I blended these elements together, I couldn’t help but think of the contrasts that De Soto National Memorial represents: conquest and exploration, nature and history, memory and reflection. Each stroke was infused with a deep sense of respect for the land, and the enduring memory of the stories it holds. For me, this artwork encapsulates a moment of quiet reflection on our collective past—a meditation on history’s beauty and the lessons it offers.
The blending of these images forms a tapestry of time, from the tranquil present-day river to the historical monuments that anchor the memory of De Soto’s travels. This piece is a personal exploration of how history shapes landscapes and how landscapes hold the echoes of past journeys, inviting future generations to learn, remember, and reflect.
This description weaves together the visual elements with historical and emotional reflection, creating a narrative that resonates with both the art and the deeper meaning behind the De Soto National Memorial.
