Pathway to Legacy: The Rise of Lincoln
In creating this image, I was thinking deeply about the journey of Abraham Lincoln, a man whose humble beginnings led to a monumental legacy. The Abraham Lincoln Birthplace Memorial Building stands tall as a neoclassical monument, symbolizing not just Lincoln’s life but also the enduring ideals he fought for—freedom, equality, and unity. The grand staircase leading up to the memorial evokes the idea of ascension, both literal and metaphorical. To me, it represents Lincoln’s rise from modest origins to one of the most revered figures in American history.

I overlaid Lincoln’s portrait onto the building as a way of merging the man with the symbol of his legacy. His image fades into the structure, reflecting how Lincoln’s character, values, and actions have become inseparable from the ideals he represents in the American consciousness. The tree-lined path , with its lush green surroundings, serves as a metaphor for growth, both personal and national. It’s a reminder that every great journey starts with small steps, often in quiet, unassuming places.
The dark, vintage tones in the background add a layer of historical depth to the image. I wanted to evoke the feeling of looking into the past, through the lens of history, to better understand the man who shaped the present. The texture of time, present in the sepia-like tones, feels aged but eternal, much like Lincoln’s legacy itself.
The Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park , located in Hodgenville, Kentucky, is a tribute to Lincoln’s early life. The Memorial Building , completed in 1911, is modeled after Greek and Roman temples, symbolizing the lasting impact of Lincoln’s leadership. Inside, it houses a symbolic log cabin, representing the humble origins of America’s 16th president. This memorial site serves as a reminder that greatness can come from even the most modest beginnings.
Lincoln’s presidency, from 1861 to 1865, was marked by the Civil War, the Emancipation Proclamation, and his vision for a united nation free of slavery. His assassination in 1865 cut his life short, but his legacy endures through countless memorials, speeches, and the ongoing pursuit of equality and justice in America.
The greens in the image, seen in the tree-lined path and surrounding foliage, represent growth, renewal, and the flourishing of Lincoln’s legacy over time. They evoke a sense of life and progression, much like Lincoln’s journey from humble beginnings to national leadership. The whites and soft grays of the memorial building symbolize purity, honor, and the clarity of purpose that defined Lincoln’s presidency. These colors give the building a sense of grandeur and reverence, reinforcing its role as a symbol of American ideals.
The dark, vintage tones —almost sepia in nature—represent history, memory, and the passage of time. These tones create a sense of nostalgia, as if we are looking back through history to better understand the significance of Lincoln’s life and work. The shadows within the image represent the struggles and hardships Lincoln faced, from personal losses to the Civil War, but also the enduring light of hope and vision that he carried with him.
As I created this piece, I couldn’t help but reflect on how deeply Lincoln’s story resonates even today. His rise from a simple log cabin to the White House is a narrative of possibility, of what can be achieved with perseverance and vision. The staircase , central to this composition, became a symbol of that journey for me—the slow, steady climb to something greater, a path we all walk in different ways.
The blending of his portrait with the architecture of the memorial was intentional. It’s as if Lincoln’s spirit is woven into the very fabric of American ideals, and I wanted to show how the man and the monument are one. The past is never truly gone; it continues to shape who we are and what we strive to become. In many ways, Lincoln’s life is a testament to the power of humility, strength, and conviction in the face of division and adversity.
There’s a quiet reverence in this image, a sense of awe at the life of a man who faced immense challenges with grace and determination. The tree-lined path invites the viewer to walk Lincoln’s journey, to reflect on how far we’ve come and how much further we have to go. The staircase evokes a sense of rising—of overcoming obstacles and moving towards something greater. There is also an emotional weight in the vintage tones —a recognition of the past and the long shadow it casts on the present.
This piece is about the interplay between history and memory, between the personal journey of one man and the national journey of a country. It’s a reflection on how far we’ve come, but also a reminder of the ideals that still guide us, embodied by the man who once walked this very path from humble beginnings to greatness.
