Guardians of the Seashore: A Fragile Dance
In creating this artwork, I wanted to capture the delicate balance between nature’s beauty and the vulnerability of the creatures that inhabit these coastal regions. The sea turtle , carefully crawling toward the sea, represents the endangered species that call the Cape Hatteras National Seashore home. Their journey from the shore to the sea is a metaphor for survival, perseverance, and the challenges of life. For me, the turtle embodies resilience, moving forward despite the dangers it faces, much like the efforts of conservationists to protect these fragile ecosystems.

The seal resting peacefully on the beach adds an element of innocence and connection to the ocean’s vast mystery. Seals are visitors to these shores, and their presence reminds us of the rich marine life that Cape Hatteras supports. The seal’s calm demeanor against the backdrop of swirling waves and vibrant skies evokes a sense of harmony between land and sea. It’s a reminder that this fragile ecosystem is home to many, all relying on the balance of nature to survive.
The landscape of Cape Hatteras is more than just a setting; it is a character in itself. The sweeping shorelines, the protective dunes, and the undulating waves all play a role in the narrative of this artwork. I wanted to emphasize the vastness and the importance of these natural spaces—spaces that are not only beautiful but also critical to the survival of various species. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore , often described as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic," holds within it both the danger of the sea and the sanctuary it provides for creatures like the sea turtle and the seal.
The colors in this piece were chosen to evoke strong emotional responses. The turquoise waters suggest the calm, life-giving properties of the ocean, but also its power and mystery. The golden orange hues , meanwhile, serve as both a representation of the sunset and a warning—a reminder of the fragility of life in these ecosystems. The combination of warm and cool tones creates a balance between peace and urgency, reflecting the need for both admiration and action in protecting these spaces.
The waves and flowing water symbolize the passage of time, the eternal ebb and flow of the ocean that shapes the coastline and the lives of the creatures who dwell there. There’s a sense of movement in the water, representing the constant changes that nature undergoes—shaped by both natural forces and human intervention. The rhythmic movement of the waves mirrors the ongoing efforts to preserve the delicate ecosystems of Cape Hatteras, and the responsibility that we share in ensuring their survival.
"Guardians of the Seashore: A Fragile Dance" is a reflection on the intricate relationship between the creatures of the sea and the coastal environment of Cape Hatteras. The sea turtle and seal, as central figures in this artwork, represent both vulnerability and resilience—creatures who have adapted to their environment but remain dependent on its protection. This piece serves as a reminder of the vital work being done to protect these species, from the National Park Service’s efforts to manage the seashore to the conservationists fighting to protect nesting grounds.
In researching the history of Cape Hatteras , I discovered the park’s deep connection to both nature and humanity. The seashore has long been a place of both danger and refuge—once known for shipwrecks and treacherous currents, it is now a sanctuary for endangered species like the sea turtle. This artwork captures that duality, celebrating the beauty of Cape Hatteras while also acknowledging the ongoing challenges of preserving it for future generations.
By combining natural elements, vibrant colors, and flowing water, this artwork aims to evoke both a sense of awe for the natural world and a call to action to protect it. Cape Hatteras National Seashore is not just a destination; it’s a symbol of the fragile dance between life and nature, a dance that we must work together to protect.
