Burst of Nature’s Glory: Old Faithful's Eternal Dance
" Burst of Nature's Glory: Old Faithful's Eternal Dance " is a celebration of one of Yellowstone’s most iconic natural wonders— Old Faithful Geyser . In creating this artwork, I wanted to encapsulate the raw, untamed power of the earth, hidden just beneath the surface, waiting to explode in spectacular fashion. Old Faithful, true to its name, has been erupting like clockwork for thousands of years, symbolizing both the power and predictability of nature’s forces.

As I worked on this image, I couldn’t help but feel awe at how timeless this scene feels, yet so immediate and alive. I chose to place Old Faithful at the center, as it represents more than just a geyser—it's a force of nature that connects us to the Earth's geothermal energy. Every eruption of Old Faithful feels like a heartbeat of the planet, a reminder that the Earth itself is alive, constantly shifting, moving, and creating.
The steaming geyser basin that surrounds the geyser shows the ever-present energy just beneath the surface. The rising steam almost feels like a connection between the Earth and sky—linking the ground to the heavens, creating an ethereal, mystical quality in the image. This steam represents transformation: hot water, under immense pressure, turning into vapor, much like how human emotion and creativity can burst forth when the conditions are right.
The reflection pool in the background mirrors the geyser’s eruption, creating a serene balance between the explosive power and the quiet stillness of nature. Water, a recurring theme in Yellowstone, plays dual roles: it’s both destructive and life-giving. This duality inspired me to create this reflective moment within the chaos.
I specifically chose bright orange hues for the ground to highlight the geothermal activity, representing the intense heat and pressure brewing beneath the surface. The orange adds a sense of danger, energy, and creation. It’s a color of action and movement, grounding the geyser’s eruption in the very forces that fuel it. Meanwhile, the blue of the sky provides a peaceful counterpoint— blue symbolizes tranquility, trust, and the vastness of nature, contrasting with the eruptive force of the geyser below.
Old Faithful, located in Yellowstone National Park , was discovered in 1870 during the Washburn Expedition. Its name comes from its consistent eruptions, which occur approximately every 90 minutes. The geyser’s predictability is what makes it one of the most well-known geysers in the world. The water that erupts from Old Faithful can reach heights of 106 to 185 feet , with each eruption releasing between 3,700 to 8,400 gallons of boiling water . Old Faithful is a symbol of Yellowstone and a reminder of the geothermal forces at work beneath the park, which sits atop one of the world’s largest active volcanic systems.
As I crafted this artwork, I was reminded of my own creative process—sometimes slow and building beneath the surface, and at other times, sudden and forceful, like Old Faithful’s eruption. This image represents not just the power of nature but also the power within us all to create, to release our energy into the world, and to inspire others. The elements of steam, water, and fire come together in a harmonious dance, symbolizing life’s balance between chaos and calm.
By capturing Old Faithful’s moment of eruption, I hoped to invoke a sense of wonder and admiration for nature’s forces. There’s something deeply emotional about watching this natural marvel—something that connects us to the primal power of the Earth. In this artwork, I wanted to give viewers a sense of that connection, that moment when time seems to stop, and nature’s beauty takes over.
In creating this, I wanted to remind myself and others that nature is both fragile and resilient. Like Old Faithful, we have the power to erupt with creativity, passion, and strength when the time is right, and when we do, we leave a lasting impact, just as this geyser has done for centuries.
